Resin Bound Preparation:

A Resin Bound Stone system should be laid onto a structurally sound and secure base, typically of either open graded tarmac or concrete which has been laid to falls with appropriate drainage. To prevent possible cracking or sinking in the resin layer there should be no movement in the sub-base. 

A solid edging detail must be in place for the resin to be laid up to. Typical edging details are concrete edgings, block edgings, aluminium metal edging or granite setts.
 

Resin Bound Stone Maintenance – How to Maintain a Resin Bound Stone Surface:

If you’ve had a Resin Bound Stone surface installed or acquired a property with an existing resin bound area, then you will need to know the proper Resin Bound maintenance methods. Resin Bound Stone is generally low maintenance, rainwater will keep it generally clean, and a light pressure wash once or twice annually will clear most sitting dirt. Although like with any surface, there are occasions where, for cleaning resin drives, rainwater and pressure washing are not sufficient. Below gives examples of some of these situations and the appropriate Resin Bound Stone maintenance techniques to overcome them. 

 

What Impact Does Snow and Ice Have on Resin Bound Maintenance? 

Especially as the winter draws in it’s important to know how to take care of your Resin Bound Stone driveway, patio, or pathway correctly. Boiling water will destroy the chemical makeup of the resin and your Resin Bound Stone area will be ruined. If you need to combat snow and ice, use road salt or grit to add extra traction underfoot. 

 

Tyre Tracking - 

Tyre marks are naturally more noticeable on lighter coloured finishes. If a light pressure wash doesn’t lift them, you can use a household surface cleaner on the affected area. Agitate the area and rinse with cold water. 

 

Moss and Algae - 

Damp and shaded areas can cause moss and algae to take place. To prevent this, treat the affected area with a herbicide solution. Afterwards, rinse the surface thoroughly with plenty of clean water. If you are unsure about doing this then please feel free to contact us. 

 

Fuel Spillages - 

Use warm soapy water to scrub the contaminated area and flush through with clean cold water. If fuel is spilled on a Resin Bound Stone surface before the full 48-hour chemical cure has completed it can be harder to remove the stain. 

 

Oil Spillages – 

For oil spillages, Resin Bound Stone maintenance should be done using a de-greaser type product. Again, check the manufacturers’ guidelines for the required strengths. Scrub the affected area and then rinse down with plenty of clean cold water. 

 

Chewing Gum – 

In the event that chewing gum gets stuck onto your Resin Bound Stone surface, use freezing techniques to remove it. Once frozen, the gum can be chipped away to restore the original Resin Bound Stone surface. 

 

Skip and Scaffolding Use – 

Board out and sheet over any areas where temporary excessive loading has potential to cause damage, such as skip usage or scaffolding. You should also avoid dragging heavy items across your Resin Bound Stone surface to avoid impact damage.
